My balcony provides a beautiful view just what a nature lover wants, its surrounded with trees all around it. And its ambience brings along squirrels, butterflies and a variety of birds... And with it was born my interest in photography and bird watching...
One evening when I was doing photography I noticed a nest in the money plant... one of the leaves was turned and sewn and there was cotton around it. I got very excited at the sight of it, but before I could have a closer look... I heard a distant "towit-towit-towit" :/ ... I instantly left the balcony and looked through the window instead ;). After a few minutes the "towit-towit" became more prominent and finally arrived the tailor bird. It hopped all over the railing, then to the christmas tree and softly bent in its nest and after a while flew away. It used to visit atleast 4-5 times during the day... my patience was wearing off, I just wanted to have a look at the nest. So, the next day when it left, I went to have a closer look... The nest was in the most secure place and had a christmas tree protecting it. I gently tapped the branch of the christmas tree over the nest and heard the young ones, but the opening was towards the wall. So, without disturbing the nest,I took a pic...
First look of the nest. |
I was very happy at the sight of the nest. A tailor bird lays upto 3 to 4 eggs and here were 3 of them; a few weeks old. Just then I heard the tailor bird nearby and left the balcony.
It was on the second or third day that there were heavy rains... Next morning was grim... I woke up by the alarming calls of the tailor bird... I went and checked the nest and saw it upturned... two young ones were missing... I searched the balcony but couldn't find them anywhere, it was hard to believe what happened overnight... could be some nocturnal bird or a rat ??. Now, there was only one left... I didn't want to touch it as they are so delicate plus the mother was becoming frantic... It continued her search for the missing ones. Once it realised they were gone she diverted all her attention to the one in the nest.

Later during the day, the one left was out of its nest, and was well fed and given extra attention. I didn't want anything to happen to this one... so I decided by evening I will shift it to a safer place.
Next morning, I got up at 5 A.M. and kept it back for its mother to care for it. Our balcony has quite a few variety of plants in it.. A safe ground for it to hop around... very soon it was all over the balcony.
